The Terzi Bridge

The Tailors (Terzi) Bridge is located on the road Gjakova – Prizren, 7th km of town Gjakova, over the Erenik River. The bridge was built in 18th century by a wealthy Tailor (Terzi) in Gjakova. The building contains elements of a cultural monument of historic, social, artistic, architectural, and cultural significance. The bridge had economic importance, as it was the main link among the Vilayets of Ottoman Empire. Its architectural value lies on the fact that the bridge was built with local stone and consists of 11 rounded arches of different sizes with 10 embedded barrel vaults between each pair of arches. Its length exceeds 192.8 meters; the width varies from 5 – 5.1 meters. Considering the few financial opportunities and inadequate technological equipment of the time, the bridge today is considered a marvel only due to the versatility and skills of the craftsman who built it. The latest restoration of the bridge was done in 1982 by the Prishtina Office (Enti Krahinor i Prishtines) for Protection of Cultural Monuments. The bridge is in good condition, but lacks maintenance.
